“You’re 39 weeks now… would you like me to do a stretch and sweep?”

For many pregnant women, this question comes unexpectedly during a routine antenatal appointment.

Some are told it will “get things moving.” Others hear it’s a simple procedure that might help them avoid a medical induction.

But what exactly is a stretch and sweep?

Does it really work?

Is it as harmless as it sounds?

And perhaps most importantly…

Can you say no?

Absolutely. Every woman deserves to know that before making her decision.

What Is a Stretch and Sweep?

A stretch and sweep, also known as a membrane sweep, is a procedure performed during a vaginal examination.

During the examination, your healthcare provider gently inserts a finger through the cervix if it is open enough and separates the membranes surrounding your baby from the lower part of the uterus. This action is intended to stimulate the release of natural prostaglandins, hormones that may encourage labour to begin.

Although it is often described as a routine examination, it is actually an intervention designed to encourage labour to start sooner.

Why Is It Offered?

Stretch and sweeps are commonly offered from around 39 weeks of pregnancy, particularly if labour has not yet started naturally.

Some healthcare providers recommend it routinely. Others suggest it because they hope it may encourage labour to begin naturally before induction becomes necessary.

However, being offered a procedure does not mean you are expected or required to accept it.

Your pregnancy.

Your choice.

Does It Actually Work?

This is where things become less straightforward.

Research suggests that a stretch and sweep may help some women go into labour slightly earlier than they otherwise would have.

However, the overall benefit appears to be modest.

Many women who have the procedure do not go into labour immediately, and some notice no difference at all.

Even in studies showing a benefit, labour was often brought forward by only a relatively short period.

In other words, it is not a guarantee, and it certainly isn’t a magic solution.

What Are the Possible Downsides?

Like any intervention, a stretch and sweep has potential disadvantages.

Some women experience:

• Significant discomfort or pain during the procedure.
• Spotting or light bleeding afterwards.
• Irregular contractions that continue for hours or even days.
• Cramping that makes sleeping difficult.

You are free to decline.

You are free to take more time to think.

Saying “Not today” is a perfectly valid decision.

Choosing to wait for labour to begin on its own is also a valid option, provided there are no medical reasons requiring an earlier birth.

Birth Is Not a Race

Pregnancy is often filled with countdowns, estimated due dates, and pressure to “get things moving.”

But babies do not all follow the same timetable.

Only a small percentage of babies are actually born on their estimated due date, and many healthy pregnancies continue beyond it.

Unless there is a genuine medical concern affecting you or your baby, allowing labour to begin in its own time often gives your body the opportunity to prepare naturally for birth.

Every pregnancy is unique.

Every baby is different.

And every decision should reflect your individual circumstances—not someone else’s timeline.

The Bottom Line

A stretch and sweep may help some women.

For others, it may make little or no difference.

It can cause discomfort, and like any intervention, it is not without potential risks.

Most importantly, it is not “just a routine check.”
